Chapter Six

"What do you have for me, Benny?"

"Well, I have good news and bad news."

Shax plopped down in the copilot's chair with a sigh. "Don't draw it out, you damn tease. Do I have a buyer or not?"

"Good news is, yes on the buyer and yes, it's on your route."

"And the bad news?" Shax had a sinking feeling that he knew and beside him Verin muttered something that sounded like Aw, crap.

"Duomo brothers. They're very interested, though."

"Fuck!" Verin spat out. "Find someone else, Benny! Nailed his fucking hand to the table. They probably laughed their heads off while Shax was trying not to scream!"

Benny's smile fell. "Sorry. I get it. I'll find some—"

"No, no." Shax held up the previously nailed hand. "It's fine, Benny. They pay well and if it's on our way, it's perfect."

A soft chiming behind him snapped Shax's head around. Ness had followed him. How deliciously interesting.

"They hurt you? You mustn't go to these people," Ness insisted softly.

"I have to go, cupcake. We need the cash."

"Please, Shax, not alone. I'll go with you."

"Oh, my fu—" The click as Benny snapped his jaw shut came through the link loud and clear. "Shaxy…you have an…angel on board?"

"An angel who shouldn't be in the damn pilot's pod," Verin snarled.

Shax let his fingers hover over the console. "Set it up, Benny. Give me the time and coordinates. We acknowledge their interest and I'm sending an opening bargaining price."

He shut down the connection and turned his chair. "Ness, these are violent, nasty people."

"Yes. I heard." A muscle in Ness's jaw jumped. "You mustn't face them without protection."

Verin let out a snort. "Right. Like wing-boy's gonna be any help."

"I think he could be." Shax leaned his head on his hands. "He's no weakling, Ver. Would be good to have someone watching my back."

"I said I would!"

"And I appreciate it, but you know why you can't." Shax tilted his head one way and then the other. "Ness, you have yourself an escort job. Never thought I'd have an angel watching over me."

"They're not gonna deal with you if you have an angel with you, bonehead."

Shax drummed his fingers on the chair arm. "They don't have to know he's an angel."

"He's got huge wings, for fuck's sake!"

"So we hide them under a coat."

Verin blew out a cloud of steam. "None of your coats are big enough."

"True. Your shoulders are broader. We'll use yours."

"Like hell you will!"

"I'll clean it and everything so you don't get angel cooties."

"Damn idiot with your moronic ideas," Verin muttered, though he'd obviously given up the fight. "Four-hour ETA on the rendezvous. Better start getting ready, princess, if you want enough primp time."

"Good point." Shax shoved up from the chair and squeezed past Ness, making certain to brush as much of himself up against that hard angelic body as he could.

The chiming of gold feathers followed him through the corridors like some odd echo of his footsteps but Shax didn't turn to look, amused that Ness kept pace with him step for step.
